Night Shift

 

 

What is this service?

  • Night Shift is a partnership between DDOT, Lyft and Detroit Cab to provide Detroiters a ride to and from their bus stop late at night.

 

 

Why is DDOT providing this service?

  • This program was created to provide more mobility to Detroiters and to learn how an on-demand type of service can work with DDOT.

 

 

How long will this service run?

  • The program will be limited to 2000 rides.

 

Who can use this service?

  • Customers riding any late-night route between 11pm and 5am.

 

 

How can I participate?

  • Ride a Connect 10 bus route between the hours of 11pm and 5am, Monday through Friday.

  • Text “DDOT” to 313-456-9328.

  • You will receive a text asking you to choose whether you would like to have a Lyft or a Taxi credit. If you text outside the program hours, you’ll receive a text asking you to text back between 11pm and 5am.

    • To receive a Lyft credit, text back “Lyft”

    • To receive a Taxi credit, text back “Taxi”

    • To receive a credit for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, text “Taxi”

  • If you texted “Lyft”, you will receive a link which will either take you to download the Lyft app (if you do not already have it installed on your phone), or it will take you directly to the Lyft app.

    • You will see a Lyft credit appear in your Lyft app.

    • Set your pickup location near your bus stop.

  • If you texted “Taxi”, you will receive a taxi phone number to call and a 4 digit code. Call the number, tell the operator your pickup and dropoff location, that you’re utilizing the Night Shift pilot, and give them the 4 digit code you received in the text to get your credit. You will be able to pay for the remainder of the ride cost with cash or credit card.

 

 

To ride with Lyft:

  • Download the Lyft app

  • Create an account

  • If you followed the link that was sent to you in the text, you should see the $7 promo code available in your account - as long as you’re within the eligible time and location request a ride

 

 

Why did you choose these routes and times to pilot the service?

  • Increasing service on the late-night routes give us the opportunity to impact the most Detroiters during a time when it is most difficult to get to and from a bus stop while learning how to grow future services. What if I don’t have a smartphone?

  • To use Lyft:

    • You, or a friend or family member can order a ride for you from their phone or use Lyft Concierge to schedule a ride in advance.

    • Remember, that you or a family member needs to text “DDOT” to 3133671360 between the hours of 11pm-5am in order to get the discount code when booking with Lyft Concierge

  • To use a Taxi:

    • Text “DDOT” to 3133571360 within program hours and follow the prompts to use a Taxi. A smartphone is not needed for this option since you will be calling to book a Taxi ride.

 

What if I don’t have a credit or debit card?

  • To use Lyft:

    • You can use prepaid gift cards from Visa, American Express, Discover, or MasterCard. A minimum balance of $25 must be loaded on the card for you to book a Lyft ride.

  • To use a Taxi:

    • You can pay the Taxi company in cash, debit, or credit card.

 

 

What if I need wheelchair accessible vehicle or physical assistance?

  • Follow the prompts stated above to receive a 4 digit code and a phone number to call the taxi provider, Detroit Cab. When you call the operator to request a ride, you will be able to ask for a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

 

 

What happens if the ride costs more than the credit given?

  • You are responsible for any balance greater than the credit amount.

    • With Lyft, you can pay by credit, debit, or prepaid gift card.

    • With the Taxi, you can pay by cash.

 

 

How many times can I use this service?

  • You can use the service once per night for the duration of the program.

 

 

Do I have to go home?

  • You can go wherever you need to; however, remember that DDOT will only pay the first $7 of any ride and that you can only use the code once per night.

 

 

What is Lyft?

  • Lyft is a ridesharing service which matches a nearby driver who then picks you up and takes you where you need to go.

 

 

How do I know that I will be safe?

  • Safety is DDOT, Lyft, and Detroit Cab’s number one priority. Lyft conducts extensive criminal and driving record checks on all drivers. In addition, drivers are required to pass vehicle inspections showing that they have reliable vehicles that are model year 2004 or newer and are in a safe, reliable condition. Detroit Cab also runs background checks on all drivers and regularly checks with the Department of Motor Vehicles for accidents, vehicle code violations and valid driver’s licenses to ensure they are aware of any issues drivers may have.

 

 

How long will it take for my ride to arrive after I request it?

  • A driver should be there within 5 to 15 minutes.

 

 

How many people can ride in a car?

  • Most vehicles allow you to bring up to 4 passengers (including yourself).

 

 

How is this service funded?

  • This service is funded through a grant by the New Economy Initiative.

 

 

What if something happens that isn’t covered here?

  • If it is an emergency call 911.
