Detroit Fire Department hosts regional Live Burn Training at state-of-the-art facility
The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) welcomed firefighters from across Michigan on Saturday for an intensive, hands-on live burn training at the Walter P. Harris Regional Training Center, showcasing one of the most advanced training environments in the Midwest.
Participants trained inside DFD’s cutting-edge burn tower, a unique facility capable of both Class A and Class B fire scenarios—making it the only tower of its kind in the Midwest region. The structure, manufactured by LION, continues to draw interest from fire departments across Michigan and beyond due to its advanced capabilities and scale.

DFD's state-of-the-art burn tower simulates live fire and serves as an excellent training tool not only for the men and women of DFD, but for departments across the state.
“This facility is something I’m incredibly proud of,” said Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms. “When I served as Second Deputy Commissioner, I had the opportunity to help oversee the modernization of the Walter P. Harris Regional Training Center. Today, it is truly living up to its name—serving not just Detroit, but departments from across the region who come here to train at the highest level.”
The live burn training provided firefighters with realistic, controlled fire conditions, allowing them to sharpen critical skills in fire suppression, decision-making, and teamwork.
Chief Mickles emphasized the importance of regional collaboration and shared resources. “We’re excited to open our doors and share both our technology and expertise with departments outside the city,” said Chief Mickles. “When we train together and learn from one another, the entire region becomes stronger and safer. We’re also incredibly grateful for the State Fireworks Safety Funds, which make opportunities like this possible.”

Lieutenant Cody Zervan works at Albee Township Fire Department and said they don’t see many structure fires and thanked Detroit for hosting this important training. “To be able to effect search and rescue in a live burn setting is great. It gives us the confidence we need to be able to do respond should something occur in our communities.”
As the DFD Training Division continues to elevate its profile across the State of Michigan, the department remains committed to providing world-class training that enhances safety, preparedness, and cooperation among fire service professionals.
