The Master Plan of Policies is a roadmap for Detroit’s future. It evaluates where we are now, what we hope to be, and what policies and actions are needed to achieve a shared vision for our future. This document has not been comprehensively updated since 2009. The City looks very different than it did in 2009 and faces very different challenges than it did then. As a result, City Council tasked the Planning and Development Department with completing a Master Plan Update beginning in 2024.

Why is the Master Plan Important to Me?

For residents, the Master Plan gives voice to your hopes and concerns for Detroit’s future and prioritizes the actions you would like the City to take to address them.

For community organizations, agencies, and institutions, it will help your leadership identify and work towards mutually supportive goals.

For businesses and developers, it articulates where and how the City will support economic growth.

For the City, it aligns strategic decision-making about when, where, and how investments, capital improvements, and department initiatives will be implemented with the Plan’s vision.
