Playground Detroit announces awardees of 20/20 Emerging Artists Fellowship

Ten emerging Detroit artists have been awarded $2,000 Playground Detroit grants to help develop their craft and pursue new bodies of work.

The inaugural grantees are: BakPak Durden, Patrick Ethen, Caroline Del Giudice, Frank Lepkowski, Sheila Nicolin, Rachel Pontius, Cristin Richard, Lindsay Splichal, Antonia Stoyanovich and Sun Wang. An online-exclusive group exhibition of awardee artwork opened Saturday, May 16, 2020.

“It’s exciting to be able to support artists with financial awards, in addition to providing mentorship and gallery experience,” says Paulina Petkoski , program manager and co-founder of Playground Detroit .

The two-year Emerging Artists Fellowship initiative will sponsor an additional 10 artists, who along with the inaugural awardees, will create gallery exhibition, off-site exhibition, performance installation or site-specific installations. The goal of the fellowship is to identify, celebrate and elevate emerging Detroit creatives.

“Detroit’s creative community is full of talented, dedicated artists, which enables a thriving arts scene—however, it remains severely underfunded even as a recognized driving force in the city,” said Petkoski. “As a small organization we are proud to be able to directly fund artists, especially now during this global crisis.”
