Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day at Home 

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22nd, the Office of Sustainability has collaborated with community partners and other city departments to host virtual events and workshops to demonstrate support for environmental protection in Detroit.

Virtual Event: Avalon International Breads' Annual Loraxathon 

Avalon’s Annual Loraxathon is an all-day virtual reading event in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. This public, marathon-style reading event of the Dr. Seuss classic The Lorax was initiated by Avalon as a way to strengthen its impact on how our community views climate change. Grab your kids and tune in to Avalon’s Facebook event page at 10:00am to read along with City of Detroit Office of Sustainability Director Joel Howrani Heeres.

Webinar: Recycling and Composting 101 with Green Living Science and FoodPLUS Detroit

To kick of our Earth Week Webinar Series, the Office of Sustainability will host an educational discussion about recycling and composting. Learn the basics from the experts at Green Living Science and FoodPLUS Detroit, and get started recycling and composting at home! 

When: Tuesday, April 21st 4:00 pm-5:00 pm.

Webinar: Save Water and Energy at Home

Tune in to attend a step-by-step workshop with Detroit Future City and Friends of the Rouge to learn how to disconnect your downspout and install a rain barrel on your own home. Then, Gibran Washington from Ecoworks will discuss energy smart occupant behaviors that will help residents save both energy and money.
