Detroit Memorial Day

Mayor Mike Duggan had declared August 31st Detroit Memorial Day in honor of the friends, family and neighbors we lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City has planned a two-day commemoration schedule.

  • Sunday, August 30: Individual district memorials will be held at 5 p.m. Find more information about your district memorial here.
  • Monday, August 31
    • 8:45 a.m. Citizens, organizations and churches around the City will be asked to ring bells for 15 minutes to honor our 1,500 victims and signal the beginning of the Memorial Drive.
    • 9:00 a.m. The Memorial Drive on Belle Isle will begin with the first of 14 processions led by local funeral homes. Family and friends will be assigned a specific procession time and should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled time at the staging site on Atwater Street across from the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre.
    • In accordance with Governor Gretchen Whitmer's social distancing guidelines, mourners are not allowed to leave their vehicles or gather. All families that follow the guidelines will receive the large billboard photos of their loved ones as a gift after the event.
    • 4:00 p.m. The Island will close and mourners will be encouraged to return home to watch a special Detroit Memorial Day concert on the Detroit Arts and Entertainment Channel (Detroit A&E – Channel 22) and The Ford Fireworks on WDIV Local 4. There will be no in-person viewing of the fireworks this year.

Mourners will receive Detroit Memorial Day Repast Vouchers to use after their procession has ended. These participating restaurants and local eateries will accept Detroit Memorial Day Repast Vouchers. The voucher is good for one time use at participating restaurants. You must present the voucher for payment. Vouchers are good from Monday, August 31 to Friday, September 4.
