Free and low-cost opportunities for at-home fun and learning at Discover Your Spark, a resource of the Youth Development Resource Center (YDRC).
Write Brain Books: Published Authors Program. Youth will work through activities via ZOOM instruction to author their own story. Each participant will have their very own book published by the end of the program. Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Book Nook: Literacy tutoring via ZOOM instruction. Each student receives one-on-one assistance working through the BookNook platform. Two days per week for 1 hour, Monday - Thursday, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
MANGO Math: Youth will work through games and activities to increase and retain math skills. Monday and Wednesdays, one hour, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Starting August 5, 2020.
Outdoor Reading Program: Youth will experience three types of outdoor reading activities. Reading Circle: staff will read stories to a small group of participants, practicing social distancing. Read and Walk: students will enjoy walking paths in our parks while stopping and reading stories at safely distanced kiosks along the walking path at select parks. Walking Classroom: youth will experience audio listening to a lesson (history, science, literature, etc.) while walking in one of our nature parks. Each student will be loaned an mp3 player. All they need is to bring a pair of headphones. We will have some headphones for purchase ($1.00) Thursdays, starting August 6, Farwell Park under the Shelter 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm.
Arts and Crafts: Individual projects for youth to create. Youth can select a project to complete and watch the step by step instructions led by a DPRD Staff person. These videos can be watched at any time starting August 10, 2020.
Scavenger Hunts: Youth will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt right at home or in a park. The items for the hunt can be found right outside your door or at one of our great parks. These scavenger hunts will take place every Friday, starting August 7, 2020. The items can them be used to make a arts & crafts project that you can upload to out Facebook page to show off your work and enter for a prize. Each week the winner will be given a prize.
Cup Stacking: Youth can learn the art and sport of cup stacking. It is not as easy as it looks! Technique will be available to watch at any time on our YouTube Channel. Sessions will be led by DPRD Instructors. Build your skill to join the cup stacking team!
Math Hoops: Baketball is in the "Bubble?!" Well we can bring basketball right to your screen with Math Hoops! This fun interactive game reinforces know math skills and enhances new skill by making it fun! The Math Hoops board will be on screen and the game can be played one on one, two against two or three on three. We will use the Zoom Platform to make sure that teams can interact with each other and play others while staying safe. Wednesdays, 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm.
Pistons JAM Sessions: Learn basketball skill from Piston players, coaches and staff while staying safe at home. All skills can be done right on your sidewalk, driveway or back yard. Sign up to get all of the information, straight from the Pistons.
