You can prepare your tax returns at home for FREE.

The Accounting Aid Society and Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency partners with two software providers to allow you free access to online tax preparation that is easy to use, convenient, and trusted. The Accounting Aid Society also provides phone assistance for people who use these programs through its website. Please consult Accounting Aid Society's “Taxpayers” for more information and to access the free tax tools.

Additionally, the Wayne Metro Lakeshore facility hosts computer labs where you can prepare your taxes for free. There is on-site support available to answer any questions.

You can file your taxes for free yourself using simple online software.   
TurboTax Free File is available to anyone with an income of less than $34,000, or less than $66,000 for active military or anyone who qualifies for the Earned Income Tax Credit.  The TurboTax Free File program includes your federal, state, and local tax returns and can handle self-employed tax returns.

MyFreeTaxes by H&R Block in partnership with United Way is available to anyone with an income of less than $66,000.  The program can handle almost any tax situation, but does not include local taxes.  If you use MyFreeTaxes, you’ll need to file your City of Detroit tax return separately.
