Tree Removal

Priority is being given to fallen trees that are blocking streets or on top of homes and vehicles. The City’s forestry crews will focus on trees that were rooted on city property or blocking streets and sidewalks.

How to determine if a tree is the city’s property or private property:

If the fallen tree is located between the curb and the sidewalk of a home, it is the responsibility of the city and city crews will address them.  To report a fallen tree on city property, residents should call 313-628-0900.

If the tree is between the sidewalk and the house or in a backyard, it is on private property and is the responsibility of the homeowner, who should contact their insurance company or a private contractor.  If the tree fell from private property but is blocking the street, residents should still call the city at 313-628-0900.

Downed Power Lines: If a fallen tree or limb has impacted a power line, stay away and call DTE Energy’s emergency line immediately at 1-800-477-4747

Removal of tree limbs: If homeowners have taken it upon themselves to cut up a fallen tree or limbs on their property, they should cut the debris into sections no longer than 48 inches and leave it at the curb for their next scheduled yard waste collection date. 

Tree Planting

As part of Mayor's Duggan's 10 point plan to improve the quality of life for the residents of the City of Detroit, the General Services Department is leading the way in planting 10,000 trees across the 7 Districts of the City. We need your help in reaching our goal of planting 1,500 trees this Spring! Just as you assisted us with the success of the Board Up Brigade, we are asking for your assistance once again, in identifying tree planting locations in your respective communities. We need you on our Tree Planting Brigade!

What is 10,000 UP?

The City of Detroit’s General Services Department has committed to planting 10,000 trees to enhance neighborhoods and promote safer and healthier communities. We are more than halfway to our goal and have planted a whopping 5,500 trees since the program began in 2017. Detroiters can take part in this program by requesting free tree planting at their homes on the berm between the sidewalk and the street by visiting

Since there is only a limited window for successful planting, your tree request may be fulfilled either in the spring or fall. All plantings will be conducted by a City of Detroit contractor. We will not utilize volunteers for this initiative.

What We Need From You?

  1. We are asking that you contact your community members and ask them if they would like a tree planted between the sidewalk and the street in front of their home.
  2. Provide us a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of the community members that have agreed to have a tree planted between the sidewalk and the street in front of their home.

What Happens Next?

After you have provided us with the tree locations and the contact information of those community members requesting trees, we will contact them via phone or door knocker, to verify their agreement to receive the tree. Once they agree, we will then place them on the list for scheduling. We will then provide the schedule to the contractor and your community's trees will be planted within our Spring planting timeline. If we cannot accommodate the request within our Spring planting timeline, they will be added to the Fall schedule.
