Did you know?
Buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, representing 60% in the Southeast Michigan region and 63% in Detroit.
The Ordinance
The City of Detroit adopted a mandatory energy, water benchmarking and transparency policy for Commercial and multifamily buildings, on November 21st, 2023.Energy Benchmarking Ordinance, Chapter 8 Sections 581-592 (2023) requires property owners to report, track and disclose a building's annual energy and water usage to the City with the goal of encouraging energy efficiency and emissions reductions. Failure to comply may result in a violation.
Why Benchmarking?
On average, benchmarking a building's energy and water usage reduces consumption. This leads to reduced operating costs and GHG emissions, and increased savings for owners and tenants. Compliance of the ordinance is a critical step to help monitor the energy and water consumption of Detroit's buildings and help the city identify opportunities for efficiency upgrades that advance Detroit's overall sustainability goals.
This tool is a resource for property owners to help with obtaining the Building ID for each building Energy Star Portfolio profile, which is required to ensure compliance with the ordinance. The City of Detroit analyzed SEMCOG building square footage data and Assessor's data to create this tool.
