IRS and partners to host unprecedented Michigan Taxpayer Assistance event October 22

DETROIT-- The Internal Revenue Service today announced a first of its kind special event called Michigan Taxpayer Assistance Day.  The program brings together tax authorities in one location and will offer taxpayers personalized help on all types of tax issues. Taxpayers will be able to get answers, and in most cases, resolutions to their problems with federal, state, county, and city taxes. 

 

This special event will take place Tuesday, October 22 from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Northwest Activities Center located at 18100 Meyers Road, Detroit, Michigan 48235. In addition to tax help there will also be representatives from the State of Michigan’s Unclaimed Property Division, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, and DTE Energy. A DivDat kiosk will be onsite along with community navigators to accept all forms of payment, including cash.

 

“This is an exciting initiative because it’s government coming together and going directly into our local community, to provide a variety of valuable services," said IRS Detroit Chief Counsel Supervisor Rob Heitmeyer.  "Whether it’s federal, state or local income tax, utility bills or county property tax issues, we’ll all be under one roof waiting to serve people that need our help. Our team of federal, state, and local partners can meet the need of almost any individual, with any tax or utility issue.”

 

Collection notices, foreclosure, bankruptcy, payment plans, penalties, past-due tax returns, and many other tax matters, can be a challenge for taxpayers.  Many of these issues require contact with specific IRS departments and tax experts.  Michigan Taxpayer Assistance Day brings together IRS from across the agency along with State of Michigan, Wayne County and City of Detroit officials to work face-to-face with taxpayers to address their unique tax problems or issues. 

 

Assistance with federal, state, and local tax problems, from obtaining currently not collectible status, installment agreements, offers-in-compromise, taxpayer identification numbers for guest students/workers, lien discharge, earned income tax credit, educational credits, understanding various notices, affordable care act questions, and even identity theft. Utility representatives will be present to help with water and energy (gas & electric) matters, including assisting with enrollment in assistance programs to significantly reduce utility costs during the upcoming Winter months. Independent experts will be present to answer all tax questions and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) be on-site to provide free tax return preparation for qualifying taxpayers.

 

IRS partners for Taxpayer Assistance Day include the City of Detroit Detroit Board of Review, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, and DivDat. The State of Michigan’s: Taxpayer Advocate, City Tax Administration, Unclaimed Property Division. The Wayne County Treasurer’s Office, DTE Energy, Accounting Aid Society, University of Michigan LITC, Michigan State University LITC and the State Bar of Michigan Taxation Section Pro Bono Panel.
