If you want to live or work in Detroit, there are opportunities for you!!
“One thing I don’t think a lot of people know are the many different things we do right here in the building. We cut our frames here, we cut our mats, we do engraving, we do photo enlargement, we do photo restoration, we do banners, we design websites. People don’t know that. They see the outside of the building and think it’s just an art gallery, but we do all that right here on Livernois, in Detroit”
Toney Hughes is a lifetime Detroiter, who retired from a city job. Hughes purchased the building at 29500 Livernois in 1993 and has had different businesses fill the space over the years. In 2006 the family decided to revamp the business and chose to turn it into an art gallery.
“The gallery was founded in 2007. It is a family owned business, with me and my son. We have have many different pieces here from international artists and local artists.”
Sherwood Art Gallery displays some original pieces from renowned artists from across the globe. They deal with about 30 local artists who use the space to sell their pieces.
The Avenue of Fashion has gone through its ups and downs but now there are more restaurants moving in, four art galleries, and a plethora of new stores opening up. Hughes says that things are booming on the Avenue right now.
“Come back to Livernois. Come back to the Avenue of Fashion. Uptown is going through a revolution just like Midtown and Downtown. It’s all lit up, and it’s exciting.”
