If you want to live or work in Detroit, there are opportunities for you!!
Good Cakes and Bakes is co-owned by April Anderson, a dedicated, passionate baker who quit her job to open this bakery that sits right on the Avenue of Fashion. A native Detroiter, April was adamant about opening her bakery in the city so when she found the space on Livernois, she knew it was the place to set up shop.
Good Cakes and Bakes uses all organic, locally sourced, natural ingredients and everything is made from scratch. April says her baked goods will bring back memories of grandmother’s and great grandmother’s who made all of their food from scratch. With all natural ingredients, Good Cakes and Bakes offers a variety of vegan options.
Famous for their gooey butter cakes, it takes a lot of preparation and time to make every dessert just right. April starts her days at 3 a.m. and says that listening to Jay-Z gets her through most mornings, but when she starts baking she is hit with a burst of energy that gets her through the long days.
The bakery has been open for about two and a half years, and April says the response from the local community has been warm and welcoming.
“We wanted to make this place a community gathering place as well, so a lot of the local community groups have their meetings here.”
From the locally sourced ingredients, to local artists whose pieces are displayed prominently throughout the store, Good Cakes and Bakes is the neighborhood bakery for the Avenue of Fashion.
The City of Detroit is committed to supporting small businesses and has developed a small business directory that highlights local entrepreneurs.
