If you want to live or work in Detroit, there are opportunities for you!!
Vaneitta Goines has had different jobs over the years, but she always had an interest in Information Technology. Goines was doing consulting work and a portion of her job involved coding updates for a website. She also volunteered for a local organization that taught children about web development and technology, which inspired her to learn more so she left to pursue an education in IT.
Goines relocated to Michigan after she was accepted into Wayne State’s graduate program, where she is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science. During her studies Goines registered for a 10-week .NET developer boot camp, hoping a certificate would increase opportunities to work while she was in school.
After Goines completed the boot camp she worked with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation to find employment.
“During the boot camp DESC was very supportive”, Vaneitta says. “They walked us through how to build a tech career resume, how to prepare for technical interviews, and were very helpful finding employers that were a match.”
Vaneitta landed a job with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a systems analyst associate in their Enterprise Information Technology Department, working on web applications. She was excited to get the position but later found out that she would have to commute to South Lyon for the job. At the time, Goines had no car and lived in Midtown Detroit. She had to take two buses and a taxi to get to her new job, which took a total of six hours both ways.
When Twanna Tidwell, a representative from DESC, found out about Goines’ extensive commute she took it upon herself to contact a local car dealer to get Vaneitta a car. Twanna worked with Marv Auto to get Vaneitta reliable transportation, working out a payment plan for her.
Goines was overwhelmed with how helpful Twanna was.
“She really went above and beyond and that has been representative of what Detroiters are willing to do for people. As long as I was willing to roll up my sleeves and make an effort, everyone who has worked with me since I’ve been here has done everything they can to help.” Twanna was happy to help Vaneitta and said that’s what she’s here for.
“It was my pleasure to assist her in her time of need. If people tell us what they need, we may have the means to assist in any way that we can. We’re here to help.”
Vaneitta has been at Blue Cross for a few months and plans to continue growing her career in IT.
“I eventually want to direct an IT training program that helps more people who haven’t been exposed to IT work, but have the capacity to do the work, like me.”
